Happy Dental Assistant Week
A little about our lovely assistants...
Ivette
Ivette is a mommy to an adorable 4 year old boy who loves her very much. She is also a mommy to a cat. They both love kitty play-time! In her free time, Ivette enjoys shopping (duh!) and traveling. She loves being a dental assistant at Modern Essence!
Willow
Willow as a kid always loved going to the dentist. This inspired her to be a dental assistant and, in the future, a dental hygienist. She has 4 siblings that she is extremely close to. They just planned a trip to California for this summer where they will attend a wedding and then go on a cruise to Mexico! Willow has always loved to travel, but has a special connection to Yellowstone. She's had the pleasure of traveling there as a child with her family as well as over the years with friends. She is so grateful for her experiences and looks forward to many more!

National Nutrition Month
It's no surprise that proper nutrition plays a role in healthy teeth and gums. This year, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics encourages you to "Go Further with Food." We can achieve numerous health benefits from eating a balanced diet. Here are some foods that are excellent for gum health:
- Onions - Neutralize oral bacteria
- Leafy Greens - Full of Vitamin C which reduces inflammation and boosts red cell production
- Green Tea - Antioxidant-rich tea helps stave off inflammation
- Peppers and Citrus Fruits - More Vitamin C!
- Shiitake Mushrooms - Contains Lentinan which fights against plaque-building bacteria
- Celery, Carrots, and Apples - Crunchy foods scrape away stuck on food and plaque
- Milk, yogurt, and Cheese - High in calcium which helps strengthen bone, but also contains caesin which helps to neutralize oral acids that are produced by bacteria
RCT Awareness
What is a Root Canal Treatment (RCT)?
Root Canal Treatment is a procedure to relieve dental pain and save your teeth. Below the white enamel of your tooth and the hard dentin layer, there is a soft tissue called pulp. A RCT removes the pulp and cleans and disinfects the inside of the tooth. It is filled with a rubber-like material and the tooth is restored with a crown or filling for protection.
When is a RCT needed?
A Root Canal may be necessary when the pulp becomes inflamed or infected. This may be due to deep decay, repeated dental procedures on the tooth, a faulty crown, or a crack or chip in the tooth. If inflammation or infection is left untreated it can cause pain or lead to an abscess.
Myths about RCT
- Root canal treatment is painful. With modern technology, you won't experience any more pain than if you went to have a cavity filled. The pain from a toothache can easily be fixed when the damaged tissue is removed.
- RCT causes illness. There is no valid scientific evidence linking root canal treatment to disease elsewhere in the body. This false claim was based on poorly designed research conducted nearly a century ago, long before modern medicine understood the causes of many diseases.
- It's better to pull a tooth than have root canal treatment. Saving your natural teeth is always the best option. RCT has a high success rate and many last a lifetime.
